The rules she carries
The labels and counseling for these ten medicines add instructions about food, timing, other medicines, and symptoms to watch for. As her day plays, each one goes on a note on the refrigerator door.
13rules to follow, on top of the schedule
- Levothyroxine: empty stomach, water only; wait 30 to 60 minutes before eating.
- Levothyroxine: keep calcium and iron supplements at least 4 hours away.
- Omeprazole: take before eating.
- Metformin: take with meals.
- Metoprolol succinate: take with or right after a meal; do not stop suddenly.
- Apixaban: about 12 hours apart. A missed dose is taken as soon as remembered the same day, then the usual schedule resumes; never double up.
- Apixaban and sertraline: no over-the-counter NSAIDs or aspirin powders unless the prescriber approves; they add bleeding risk.
- Gabapentin: no more than 12 hours between doses; take it at least 2 hours after an aluminum or magnesium antacid.
- Gabapentin: stand up slowly; it can cause dizziness and falls.
- Furosemide: take it in the morning so it does not wake her at night.
- Lisinopril: no potassium supplements or salt substitutes unless told to use them.
- Atorvastatin: report unexplained muscle pain or weakness.
- Sertraline: do not stop suddenly.
